Position Overview

The Director of IT Engineering and Solution Design leads the solution team and has the ultimate responsibility for designing and building the core applications and network infrastructure to support MedImmune’s business needs. In addition to traditional IT infrastructure scope (e.g. LAN, WAN, Telephony); the application infrastructure encompasses everything from database and middleware solutions to the responsibility for optimizing networks and server utilization in a distributed environment.

By creating processes for anticipating and managing demand, this individual will be responsible for creating a resilient backbone infrastructure that can be leveraged for installing various business applications (Software packages and in-house developed applications).

This individual will manage a team of professionals who will work closely with the other teams within IT to:

• Design and implement an environment that supports the long-term IT strategy
• Design solutions while maintaining compliance with security and enterprise architecture requirements
• Anticipate and plan for the growth based on projected business needs
• Ensure the health and stability of the infrastructure through effective utilization of technical assets

As the manager of the Engineering and Design team, the Director must ensure that the appropriate mix of internal, outsourced, and external contract staff is in place to design and deliver the core infrastructure technologies and tools.


 

Position Requirements Essential Functions

Leadership
• Demonstrate real-world, hands-on experience designing and implementing enterprise class applications and traditional (LAN/WAN) infrastructure to support MedImmune’s evolving business needs
• Demonstrate professional project planning, management, and execution techniques while managing multiple conflicting priorities
• Craft reasonable and feasible project documents that address client needs, provide opportunity for IT to exceed client expectations and ensure that project can be completed within reasonable time and within budget
• Provide project deliverable review to ensure quality standards are met and customers are satisfied
• Conduct risk assessments and create mitigation plans for integrated solutions.


Business and Technology

• Real-world knowledge of past, current and emerging technologies and implementation scenarios across all of the following areas:

• Desktop management
• Database and middleware
• IT systems
• Networking (LAN, WAN)
• Storage
• Security
• Data Centers
• Enterprise management

• Understand MedImmune’s business and technology drivers and how they affect projects
• Conduct business and technological analysis of all available technologies and design solutions closely matching internal clients business and technological needs
• Pro-actively identify opportunities to improve stability, supportability, scalability, and performance of the current infrastructure, and then develop the business case for implementation
• Validate solutions for consistency with long-term strategy and compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements


Team Management

• Demonstrated ability to perform all managerial activities required for an internal IT team of up to 30 individuals, to include evaluations, training and development, employee retention, promotions, client satisfaction, and other administrative activities, as required
• Experience in managing a team of engineers and solution architects on a project and/or managing complex projects
• Identify skills and staff projects leveraging best available resources for tasks/project
• Coach and mentor team members to encourage individual growth, maximizing active and productive time, and willingness to stretch beyond existing comfort zones
• Manage and maintain accountability for IT outsourcing vendors and contractors across every stage of the project lifecycle (detailed design, build, test, deployment, and steady state operations)


 

Educational Requirements Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelors Degree, Masters preferred
• 15+ years of related work experience
• Experience managing diverse and distributed 10-50+ person teams
• Experience with managing large vendor outsourcing arrangements
• ITIL Foundation Level Certification
• Extremely motivated and driven
• People management skills
• Excellent communication and internal client-facing skills (written and verbal)
• Outstanding analysis and creative problem solving skills
• Must be authorized to work for any US employer
• Ability to Travel
