Description Title: Vice President, Research & Development Operations
Location: MD, Gaithersburg - Corporate Headquarters

Position Summary:

This position will oversee the operations of the Global Research & Development organization through three main areas of functionality.

• Management of the Global Research operations, including: departmental budget and Long Range Operating Plan (LROP); contracts and external alliances; Research Information Systems; Project and Portfolio Management; and Laboratory Operations.

• Works with Global Research, Development, and Vaccines operations teams to build systems, programs, and processes that balance individual functional realities with needs of an integrated drug development organization.

• This position will partner with the Senior Vice President, Global R&D on the development and administration of the necessary processes for effective functioning of the executive R&D Team.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Work closely with the SVP, Global Research & Development and the Research & Development Team (RDT) in all Operational aspects of the Research & Development organization

• Work closely with RDT and the Finance organization in the management of budget; be the point person in budget planning and take the lead in the R&D budget forecasting process and management of the LROP

• Lead strategy management processes that enable the RDT to monitor, update and prioritize plans and objectives throughout the year

• Co-ordinate management of projects (across Research & Development) timelines, resources, and priorities. Lead the portfolio management/prioritization process across the whole of R&D

• Interface with the Project Planning, Clinical, and Operations groups for coordinating project advancement and establish seamless communication and working relationships with these departments

• Provide project support to the SVP, Global Research & Development and other leaders as necessary

• Interface with business support functions (IT, Finance, Legal, Communications, HR, etc) to ensure that initiatives that reach across the entire R&D organization have appropriate connectivity, engagement and project management support

• Ensure the R&D organization has effective, up to date information systems to support scientific activities and the management of information

• In collaboration with global engineering function, ensure office and laboratory facilities globally meet the needs of a growing organization

• Ensure the value and contributions of the Scientific Writing functions meet growing global needs

• Responsible for planning, agenda setting, and facilitation of regular RDT meetings

• Interact/liaise with Operations counterparts across the company

• Oversee management of external alliances and contracts (working with Project Planning, BD and legal groups)

 

Position Requirements • As member of the RDT, be actively involved in the establishment and prioritization of objectives for the global Research & Development organization

• Provide coaching, development, and performance management to support staff. Create an environment in which employees can successfully achieve professional growth

Educational Requirements Education & Experience Requirements:

Advanced degree or equivalent work experience required; Ph.D. or equivalent preferred

At least eight to ten years experience in a fast-paced research setting, preferably biotechnology, with experience in the planning, execution and budgeting of multiple projects in a large and dynamic portfolio

Demonstrated ability to oversee and co-ordinate multiple projects and alliances that are running concurrently

Demonstrated ability to lead a diverse organization through subordinate managers
